Q&A - Frequently asked questions

What types of makeup techniques are taught?

In our beauty courses, we focus on techniques that can be easily adapted to any face or eye shape. Your personal makeup style determines the style and intensity of the makeup. We aim for a good variety in looks and techniques by sometimes pushing you out of your comfort zone and challenging you to broaden your style a bit, so you can appeal to a wider audience/clientele.

What is the duration of the training?

Beauty 1 & 2 each consist of 8 lessons. The courses are short and powerful, packed with information. Thanks to the make-up book, you can easily relive the lessons. You are asked to practice the learned techniques between lessons, so that I as a teacher can go deeper into your questions during the next lesson day. Beauty Pro consists of 9 lessons.

Are certificates or diplomas awarded upon completion of the course?

After successfully completing a course, you will always receive a nice certificate. A diploma as a make-up artist does not exist, contrary to what many schools claim. Often, the word "diploma" is played with until you realize it's actually a certificate that proves your attendance during lessons. In my entire career as a make-up artist, no one has ever asked for a diploma or certificate. People come to you because they see your work, so working on your portfolio is a more important aspect of your training. You do NOT need a diploma to start as a make-up artist. So, if you choose a course, you are choosing to improve, receive good guidance, and learn the right techniques in a clear and to-the-point manner.

Who are the instructors and what is their experience and expertise?

I (TomV) and Julie Lecarme are instructors at TomVacademy. In my career, I have worked in every segment where makeup is involved, such as fashion, photo shoots, musicals, publications, film, music videos, theatre, retail, festivals and events, private clients, and Hollywood stars. You can therefore count on thorough knowledge and you will notice that I can easily give clear answers to all your questions.

What materials and products are provided during the training?

I am very aware that for some courses you ARE FORCED to purchase products that do not perform well. Here at TomVacademy, it's important that the products support you, and not the other way around. I personally work with MESAUDA, an Italian beauty brand that is versatile, affordable, and of top quality. You are free to choose what you use during the lessons, but from experience, I have noticed that many students eventually switch to the products I use. Quality speaks for itself. Makeup kits can be purchased through the webshop. They are put together in such a way that you have the best performing products for the lessons.

Are internships or practical experiences offered as part of the program?

YES! I know better than anyone that it can be a challenge to get started as a make-up artist or beauty specialist after your training. That's why we have the event team. You can audition to be admitted to this team and you will get many opportunities to work at, for example, Tomorrowland, events and photoshoots. You will be offered free workshops and you will be paid market-rate as a make-up artist for most jobs. (see event team)

Are there opportunities for further training or specialization after completing the program?

Yes, you can always ask for additional personal guidance. This can take place at the academy or online with virtual guidance. (see online courses)

Are there any reviews or testimonials from former students available?

Yes, you can read feedback from former students via Google Reviews.

Is hygiene and safety addressed during the training?

Naturally. We work on the face, so from lesson one and throughout the training, emphasis is placed on care, safety, and hygiene during make-up application.

Are there any restrictions or requirements for admission to the programme, such as age or prior education?

The courses can be attended from the age of 16 with parental consent. Most students range in age between 22 and 55 years old. A preliminary education is required for Beauty 2 and Beauty Pro. From experience, I know that the level is higher than at most schools in Belgium, so it is often advisable to start with Beauty 1.

Does the training address different skin types, skin tones, and ethnicities?

Yes, you need to bring a model to almost every class, unless you are taking the course to learn how to do your own makeup. Any model is welcome. In Beauty Pro, there are specific lessons where I teach techniques for applying makeup to tanned to dark skin. Also, think logically when you bring a model to class. Don't challenge yourself too much if you haven't learned certain techniques yet.

Is there an opportunity to get acquainted with the programme, for example through an open day or a trial lesson?

Outside of school holidays, classes are held every week at this academy, so you can always send an email and ask if you can attend the class as a model or just to have a look. Welcome! ❤️
